Shot accuracy

What share of unblocked shot attempts reach the goalie or the back of the net, from each spot on the ice. Pick a shot type, or compare all of them in the grid below. Blue is accurate; pale is where attempts sail wide, high or off the iron.

How this is measured

Attempts are unblocked shots on a goalie in net: goals, shots on goal and missed shots (posts and crossbars count as misses, as in the NHL feed). Blocked shots are left out because the feed places them where the blocker stood, not where the shot came from, and gives most of them no shot type. Empty-net attempts, penalty shots and shootouts are excluded. Locations are the play-by-play coordinates, turned so every attempt is aimed at the net at the top.

Each spot shows the on-net share of all attempts within a few feet: counts are smoothed with a Gaussian kernel (σ = 3 ft) before dividing, and spots with fewer than about 25 nearby attempts are left blank. “vs type average” colours each spot against the chosen type's overall share, so a spot can be blue on a slap-shot map at a lower share than a wrist shot needs.
